FYP 2 Week 3 : Problem statement and Objective

PROBLEM STATEMENT

On the real situation, process of understanding and classify breakdown of medical equipment take a long period for the nurses to do it. This problem should be handled less than five to ten minutes according to the priority of the machines. This situation is very important because it will determine what the cause and put the patients’ life in danger state.

After that, the process of delivery messages from the first person who meet the problems to the technician personal who are able to solve the false from the equipments with their skills and knowledge. Base on site visit that we have done before, the delivery method that currently use is the staff have to update to the system, make a notice and e-mail to the main inbox centre for the technician. This method seriously consume a lot of time.

On the other hands, the performance for both junior and senior biomedical technician has declined because they are informed late about the breakdown but they have to settle down in a blink of eyes. On the other words, they are not prepared well and don’t have enough time to do revision yet study new things in term of solving biomedical equipment problems. Plus, the teaching lesson between both side, become redundant and the time for sharing session become less and insufficient. Hence, the huge gap of knowledge can obviously observe between them.

Objectives of the Project

  1. To collect a lot of information regarding alarm sound in targeted medical equipment such as frequency, period or amplitude. Every type of breakdown will produce different alarm sound which has their own specific criteria such as frequency, amplitude and period. Those alarms mostly sound almost the same to the human ears.
  2. To identify possible detection technique in order to provide breakdown alarm  solution using both hardware and software. A few medical equipment have been selected which are patient monitor and infusion pump volumetric. Both produce alarm sound when false / breakdown occur.
  3. To produce medical device alarm detection system which capable to continuous monitor and update status to  end user via Internet Medical of things ( IMoT ). This device will be attached  to the external side of the medical equipment to continuously monitor status and keep update to the system.
